Belfast residents who find bed bugs will not find a council treatment service waiting. The city’s pest team focuses on rats and mice. This page explains what that means and how to move forward.
What Belfast City Council offers
We checked the council’s pest control page in October 2026. It offers appointments for rats and mice inside a property, and for rats outdoors. Bed bugs are not on the list.
NI Direct says the same thing from the national side. For Belfast, it states that the service offers appointments about rats and mice only. It adds that the service can give advice about other types of pests. So a call to the council may help with advice, but it will not lead to a treatment visit.
That advice may still help you identify the insect and plan your next step. Our post on whether councils treat bed bugs shows how patchy provision is across the UK.
Why the next council may differ
Each Northern Ireland council sets its own pest policy. NI Direct lists some with no pest service, such as Antrim and Newtownabbey. It also lists others, such as Lisburn and Castlereagh, that offer a service in private homes.
Therefore a friend or relative just outside Belfast may have different options from you. Always check the council for the address where the bugs are, not the one where you work or sleep most nights. If you move between homes, check each address separately.
Who lives in Belfast
The 2021 Census counted about 345,400 usual residents in Belfast, according to NISRA. We did not open a verified source for the city’s tenure split, so we do not quote any housing percentages here. Even so, shared buildings make bed bugs harder to clear, because the bugs can move between neighbouring homes.
If you rent, talk to your landlord early and keep written records. Our post on renters’ rights and bed bugs for landlords explains the English rules. Because tenancy law differs across the UK, read it as background, not as Northern Ireland advice. For landlords with several units, our landlord guide covers coordinated treatment.
Choosing a professional in Belfast
Since the council does not treat bed bugs, you will most likely hire a private firm. Start with our guide to finding a bed bug exterminator. It explains what proof of training and insurance to ask for.
Next, use the questions to ask checklist. For example, ask how many visits the quote covers and what happens if the bugs return. Then read the cost guide to see what drives a price.
We do not name or recommend any company here, and we do not publish private prices. Compare at least two written quotes. Ask for an inspection before any treatment, so the firm confirms the problem first. Also look at the method, the visits and the follow-up terms, rather than the lowest number alone.
Preparing for a visit
Preparation makes the technician’s job quicker. First, wash bedding and clothes on a hot cycle where the labels allow. Then bag them and keep them sealed. After that, learn about the treatment methods your firm plans to use, so you know what to expect on the day.
Next, clear the floor, empty the bedside tables and pull the bed slightly from the wall. Also give the technician a list of anyone who sleeps in the room, including children and pets. Our preparation guide has the full checklist. If a hotel or shop is affected, see our page for hotels and businesses.
When the problem is bigger than one room
Some cases need more than a single treatment. For example, a landlord with several flats, or a guest house with many beds, must plan the work in stages. Treating one unit while the next stays untouched often just moves the bugs along.
In those cases, agree one plan in writing with the firm. It should name which units are treated, in what order and when the follow-up checks happen. Also tell residents what to expect, because cooperation decides whether the plan works. Our guide for landlords sets out the steps in more detail.
Nearby areas and the request form
Belfast sits across the water from Great Britain, but council policy there is still worth comparing. Read the Glasgow area guide and bed bug help in Liverpool to see how other big cities handle bed bugs.
When you want help, use the on-site request form. Tell us your postcode, the type of property and what you have seen. That lets us pass on a clear request.
Council pest control in Belfast
Belfast City Council publishes its own pest control information, including whether it treats bed bugs, any charges and how to book. Check it first, then compare it with a private professional’s written scope.

Frequently asked questions
Does Belfast City Council treat bed bugs?
No. Its pest service offers appointments for rats and mice, and NI Direct says it can give advice about other pests. We checked both pages in October 2026.
Do other Northern Ireland councils offer the same service?
Not necessarily. NI Direct lists councils with no pest service, such as Antrim and Newtownabbey, and others that offer a private-home service, such as Lisburn and Castlereagh. A relative next door may have different options.
Can the council give advice about bed bugs?
NI Direct says the Belfast service can give advice about other types of pests. That is a useful first call, but you will still need a professional for treatment.
Does the Renters' Rights Act apply in Northern Ireland?
Our Renters' Rights Act post is written for England, so it will not map straight onto Northern Ireland. Tenancy law differs across the UK nations, so check local guidance.
